Position Overview

Under general supervision of the nursing supervisor and in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures, provides patient care and treatment consistent with patient treatment plan on an assigned shift, on an assigned unit. Responsible for nursing activities in a patient or health care unit, utilizing professional training and expertise in the field of nursing. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Makes frequent rounds to review status and safety of patients. Provides work related guidance, instruction and explanation to paraprofessional nursing and other direct care staff. Participates in admission procedures when assigned as a screening nurse. Inventories, orders, and maintains security of medications.

Job Responsibilities

25% 1. In accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures, provides patient care and treatment consistent with patient treatment plan on an assigned shift, on an assigned unit. Provides patient care and treatment consistent with patient treatment plan on an assigned shift, on an assigned unit. Responsible for nursing activities in a patient or health care unit, utilizing professional training and expertise in the field of nursing. Utilizing the nursing process, plans and provides nursing care for patients receiving health care services. Completes nursing assessment/reassessments, identifies, and anticipates health care problems and develops outcome strategies based upon nursing assessment. Monitors and documents therapeutic side effects of medication.

20% 2. Performs a variety of nursing care functions including preparing and administering medication, obtaining laboratory specimens, preparing patients for specialized diagnostic testing, providing Basic Life Support (BLS). Sets up, operates, and monitors special equipment such as Automated External Defibrillator (AED), oxygen administration equipment, Ambu-bag resuscitation equipment and all aspects of the emergency cart, including Electrocardiogram (EKG) monitoring.

10% 3. Makes frequent rounds to review status and safety of patients and to review nursing care provided by staff. Consults with physicians and other professional staff regarding patient treatment and care. Shares information with oncoming nursing staff. Maintains confidentiality of patient related information.

10% 4. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Attends treatment team meetings.

10% 5. Provides work related guidance, instruction and explanation to paraprofessional nursing and other direct care staff in patient care and treatment and the use of equipment. Clinically monitors and participates in the implementation of prescribed interventions, including special observation and restraints and seclusion.

10% 6. Completes mandatory training requirements and participates in continuing education workshops and seminars to maintain age and disability specific professional competency. Provides prescribed orientation and on the job training for assigned nursing staff.

5% 7. Participates in admission procedures when assigned as a screening nurse. Provides information to the screening committee, reflected in the 72-hour nursing care plan of the patient s medical history, physical and mental status.

5% 8. Inventories, orders, and maintains security of medications and other medical equipment and supplies. Assures a safe, sanitary, and therapeutic environment of care.

5% 9. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor s degree in nursing.
  2. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
